Attitudes
- Implicit
- You don’t necessarily know you have those beliefs, eg making assumptions about people
- If cognitively they don’t think they’re racist, but have negative emotions towards a person because of their race and then behave by calling the police
- Explicit
- You know you have the beliefs
Associations
Implicit associations, the subconscious idea that things are connected, we kinda did this before with racism where if you associate bad words such as "poison" more with black people.
This is done where you use 2 keys on the keyboard, one for black and good and one for white and bad. this is then reversed, and the times are compared to test your implicit association.
The tripartite model
- Affective
- Emotions/feelings
- Subconscious summary
- “I feel anxious about the exam so I’m going to do poorly”
- Behavioral
- Actions/intention
- What you intend to do or have done
- Invested effort
- “I didn’t study much so I’m going to do poorly”
- Cognitive
- Beliefs about yourself, others, topics, just anything
- “I’m bad at maths so I’m going to do poorly”
