Gestalt is the idea that the sum of parts is different to the individual constituent artefacts

• Figure & ground, figure is the perceived object, ground is everything else. Adds depth to an image
• Similarity, elements with similar attributes are seen to be more connected than those that are dissimilar
• Proximity, elements closer together are more connected than those which are far apart
• Continuation, objects aligned in compositions are perceived to be connected. Also leads our eyes and directs focus
• Closure: hypersensitive agency detectors, our brains like filling in blanks and creating noticeable objects. We can see segmented images instead as a whole
